ICBA to Congress: Include remote notarization in COVID-19 response

Mar 27, 2020

ICBA and other groups expressed support for Congress including in coronavirus response legislation a provision allowing the immediate nationwide use of Remote Online Notarization technology.

RON laws allow businesses and consumers to execute critical documents using two-way audiovisual communication.

In a joint letter, the groups said current requirements for signers to physically be in the presence of a notary are antiquated and unnecessary in a time of heightened awareness and social distancing.

The Securing and Enabling Commerce Using Remote and Electronic Notarization Act (S. 5355 and H.R. 6364) would provide certainty for interstate recognition of RON and establish minimum standards to ensure strong consumer protections
