Senior ICBA staff this week participated in two meetings with federal officials related to getting the government-sponsored enterprises, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, out of conservatorship.

Details: At the meetings with GSE representatives, Treasury officials, industry participants, and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, ICBA discussed its Principles for Exiting Conservatorship.

Background: President Donald Trump in May said he was working to take Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac out of conservatorship while maintaining an implicit government guarantee on their obligations and securities.

ICBA View: ICBA does not support perpetual conservatorship of the GSEs and has urged the FHFA and Treasury to end the conservatorships in an orderly and transparent manner while avoiding any disruption of the mortgage market. In a Main Street Matters blog post last year, ICBA said it was time for policymakers to free Fannie and Freddie from government control to support the nation’s housing sector.
