Q: Tell us about your background.

A: My banking career began in 2007 in credit card customer service, progressing to roles such as customer service supervisor, business analyst and team lead for issue management. [I was then] a compliance auditor at a regional CPA firm for two years. For the past seven years, I’ve worked in BSA and compliance‑related roles at two eastern South Dakota community banks.

Q: How do you set yourself up for a productive day?

A: I complete the nonnegotiables first, then prioritize tasks based on their impact and time available.

Q: How do you keep track of tasks?

A: I start with the risk assessment, follow applicable regulations and build from there.

Q: Take us through a typical day.

A: After checking emails, I get into the technical checkboxes of the day, which is generally alert and case management for the bank’s BSA program. I also take time to answer general questions and do compliance-related testing and reviews.

Q: What resources are essential to your work and success?

A: Aside from our bank’s core software platform, I can’t live without my calendar, OneNote and BSA software platform.

Q: What’s the best advice you have for others in your role?

A: Try looking at yourself as a banker before you look at yourself as a compliance officer. You play a critical role in the success of the bank.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the ICBA Compliance Institute or the Annual Current Issues Certification Conference?

A: The content is valuable, but I most enjoy the people and the relationships built throughout the conference.

Q: How has your designation affected your career and role?

A: It’s given me a foundational understanding of many different bank regulations and introduced me to a great group of individuals to network with. It has also provided me with the necessary tools to grow in my career.
