New bill would establish national data breach standard

Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) reintroduced ICBA-advocated legislation to establish a national data breach notification standard.

Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) reintroduced ICBA-advocated legislation to establish a national data breach notification standard.

New Bill: The Consumer Information Notification Requirement Act (H.R. 9588) would require federal agencies to establish uniform consumer data breach notification standards that are equivalent to those in place for financial institutions under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.

ICBA Position: ICBA has repeatedly advocated—including in a recent comment letter to the Federal Trade Commission and congressional testimony last year—a national standard that preempts the current patchwork of inconsistent state and local data protection and notification standards to address third-party breaches.
