Community Banking Leaders Gather in New Mexico

Washington, D.C. (April 21, 2004) - The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) held its annual committee leadership meetings this weekend in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. More than 30 volunteer leaders representing community banks from 21 states met to discuss the national trade association's many initiatives and goals for the coming year.

The leadership discussed several important issues facing the community banking industry today, such as regulation of the housing government-sponsored enterprises, deposit insurance reform, regulatory burden relief, the industrial loan company threat to separation of banking and commerce, and the unfair tax-exemption advantage of mega-credit unions that compete against banks.

"This meeting was a great beginning for the work ICBA will do throughout the year and beyond to serve the needs and interests of the nation's community banks across the country," said Dale L. Leighty, chairman of ICBA. "The knowledge and experience of our leadership is unmatched in the banking industry. There was a tremendous amount of expertise at the meeting to deal with these issues."

The chairmen and vice chairmen of ICBA's 14 standing committees and the association's officers attended last weekend's leadership meeting. Last month, ICBA installed its new officers at its National Convention and Techworld show in San Diego, Calif.

Last weekend's leadership meeting also prepared for ICBA's Joint Committee Meetings, held May 8-12, 2004, in Washington, D.C, where all of the trade association's committees will convene. More than 300 community bankers from across the country will gather for the meeting.
