ICBA Honors Community Banks for Outstanding Community Service
Washington, D.C. (April 4, 2006)—The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA), named five community banks to receive top honors for outstanding volunteer service performed in their communities in the 2006 National Community Bank Service Awards. The honorees are:
- Grand National Award: Northeast Bank, Minneapolis, Minn.
- National Award: Kennebec Savings Bank, Augusta, Maine
- National Award: American Federal Savings Bank, Helena, Mont.
- National Award: 1st National Bank of Scotia, Scotia, N.Y.
- Special Recognition in an Extraordinary Year: OMNI Bank, Metairie, La.
Northeast Bank has a number of community service programs, including bank staff working as volunteers at community centers and helping non-profits develop community outreach activities. All of Northeast's service programs are supported by a bank culture that encourages hometown community involvement.
Kennebec Savings has played a key role in raising both funds and awareness for the American Lung Foundation of Maine's annual 180-mile bicycle trek. American Federal's community bankers help seniors in the community with home maintenance projects. 1st National Bank organized a Business Improvement District to redevelop Scotia's main street. OMNI Bank pushed aside competitive issues to help other banks and ensure residents had access to banking services in the days immediately following Hurricane Katrina.
"The dedication and commitment of community bankers strengthen the communities they serve and exemplify how community banks nationwide are working to make their localities a better place to live and work," said Camden R. Fine, ICBA president and CEO in announcing this year's honorees. "While these five exemplify our nation's community banks, there are many, many more whose programs contribute to their communities by offering personal time and resources."
ICBA founded the National Community Bank Service Awards program five years ago as part of April's Community Banking Month to recognize the outstanding volunteer efforts of community banks.
