ICBA Honors Three Community Banks for Outstanding Community Service

As Part of National Community Bank Service Awards Program

Las Vegas, Nev. (March 14, 2013)—The Independent Community Bankers of America® (ICBA) today honored three community banks that have demonstrated outstanding customer service with the 2013 ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards. The three community bank award recipients were announced during ICBA’s 2013 National Convention and Techworld® in Las Vegas, Nev. The ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards bring national recognition to the unparalleled contributions community banks make to help build sustainable communities. The awards are given annually to community banks that show longstanding commitments to community outreach and development.

“We commend this year’s community bank award recipients for giving their time, expertise and resources to better their communities and the lives of local residents. Their actions and generosity exemplify what community banking is all about,” incoming ICBA Chairman Bill Loving, president and CEO of Pendleton Community Bank in Franklin, W.Va., said. “ICBA founded the National Community Bank Service Awards program to help celebrate the outstanding volunteer efforts of the nation’s community banks, which for generations have taken a proactive approach to helping local residents and their communities thrive.”

ICBA is pleased to honor the following community banks with the 2013 ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards:

Grand National Award:

  •  The New Washington State Bank, Charlestown, Ind.

National Award:  

  • For banks with assets over $500 million: Two Rivers Bank and Trust, Burlington, Iowa
  • For banks with assets under $500 million: OakStar Bank, Springfield, Mo.

As the Grand National award recipient, The New Washington State Bank is being recognized for its efforts following a devastating multi-vortex EF4 tornado, which struck several rural Indiana towns, including four in which the community bank operates. Mobilizing within minutes after the storms passed, The New Washington State Bank hosted cookouts to help feed victims and volunteers, volunteered time to sort clothes, distributed food and goods, and counseled local residents who needed additional help. To get rebuilding money flowing, the community bank spearheaded the creation of a multi-organizational effort that resulted in The New Hope Services/Indiana Bankers Association Disaster Relief Fund, which was up and running just seven days after the storms hit. The fund raised $380,000, which was fully distributed to 146 families, businesses and nonprofit groups. The fund also helped replace library books and band instruments at Henryville High School—a gesture that significantly boosted student morale.

Two Rivers Bank and Trust was named a National Award recipient in recognition of its Paint-A-Thon program, a project it has managed since 1993 that beautifies the community, raises the property value of hundreds of homes and builds community spirit and pride. With help from its 128 employees in 14 locations, along with additional community volunteers and sponsors, the Paint-A-Thon project helps approximately 16 homeowners per year whose homes are in need of a new coat of paint. Many of the homeowners either lack the resources or ability to paint their homes themselves, so hundreds of local volunteers spend several hours after work during the week following Labor Day, painting the exterior of each home.

OakStar Bank was named a National Award recipient in recognition of several of it community projects, including its Shoe Buddy Boxes, Healthy Place to Play and Jean Fridays programs. OakStar Bank supports about 35 percent of the Shoe Buddy Boxes program, which is expected to provide more than 1,200 pairs of shoes to children in Springfield schools in 2013. The donation to the Shoe Buddy Boxes program is not only monetary—community bank employees also put in time to coordinate a portion of the program. OakStar Bank also supports the Healthy Place to Play initiative, which aimed to raise $3.5 million to upgrade athletic facilities at Springfield’s five high schools and nine middle schools. It needed a $120,000 kick-start, which OakStar Bank funded. Additionally OakStar Bank has a longstanding tradition of employees “paying” to wear jeans on Fridays. The donations—about $250 to $500 per month—go to charities nominated by the employees themselves. Recent recipients include a local crisis shelter for children, an international relief organization and a nonprofit that helps persons with disabilities afford assistance dogs.
