ICBA Supports American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Efforts
Encourages Community Banks to Take Action
Washington, D.C. (August 30, 2005) - In the wake of the American Red Cross launching its largest mobilization effort in history in response to Hurricane Katrina, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) encourages community banks to implement customer donation programs to help replenish the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
"Hurricane Katrina was devastating to many of our friends and neighbors in Southern communities," said Camden R. Fine, ICBA president and CEO. "ICBA has an alliance with the American Red Cross which allows all ICBA member banks to easily and quickly set up a program to allow their customers to donate to the Disaster Relief Fund. We know that community bankers throughout our country will be the first to step up and help through donations and whatever else it takes. That's what community bankers do."
The Disaster Relief Fund enables the American Red Cross to be there for victims of tragedy across the country, but it requires constant replenishment. The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Hurricane Katrina is the eleventh named storm in what NOAA is predicting will be another above-normal season and historically, the most damaging storms occur in September and October. During last year's destructive and historic hurricane season the American Red Cross says it spent more than $100 million on assistance to victims. ICBA is encouraging community banks to set up a Disaster Relief Fund program in their bank to allow customers to make a donation.
