Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd Gathers Graduates and Community with 28,000 Attendees

Edmond Community Bank Commemorates Grads with Local Music, Food and Shopping

EDMOND, Okla. (May 22, 2017) – This month, Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd brought the community together for a celebration to commemorate graduates in downtown Edmond. More than 28,000 attendees enjoyed three live local bands and more than 60 vendors including an active kids area all hosted and volunteer-ran by Edmond’s local community bank.

“I am consistently blown away by how the community comes together for our little bank’s huge community celebration and block party,” said Heard on Hurd creator and President and CEO of Citizens Bank Jill Castilla. “As one social media post said so well, it’s impossible not to catch someone you know at Heard on Hurd and it’s a great opportunity to have a casual night out with the kids or celebrate something special. We even saw a bride-to-be ask her close friend to be a bridesmaid on Saturday night!”

The Heard on Hurd music stage this month featured the soulful pop vocals of Bryce Merritt, an Edmond Memorial graduate, the rocking pop/new wave vibes of Saint Loretto and the Americana tunes of singer/songwriter Rozlyn Zora.

This month’s festival hosted many activities that supported Edmond Public Schools and its student groups. Edmond Santa Fe High School had a violist from their orchestra perform at Main and Broadway and their mascot, Wolfie, made an appearance to celebrate graduates. Ida Freeman Elementary’s third grade class hosted a booth to help teach economic concepts to their students. Edmond high schoolers hosted a dunk tank in the kids area to help raise money for the Edmond Public Schools Foundation. Attendees through their alcohol and Heard on Hurd merchandise purchases also helped raise money for the same cause. Last season, attendees helped raise $9,000 towards that cause.

Cheyenne Middle School’s Technology Student Association (TSA) hosted a robotics maze and game in the kids area.

“Our kids had a blast showing off their robot projects and teaching younger kids and adults how to drive their machines,” said Mrs. Jill Sullins, Cheyenne Middle School’s TSA teacher sponsor. “Heard on Hurd is a true gathering of community and we’re so proud that we could take part in it.”

Small business owners enjoy being a part of and benefiting from the community building event.

“Community doesn’t just happen and it’s not an accident. It’s about people purposely coming together and building relationships that are beneficial to the group as a whole,” said David Greggs, pitmaster of The Flying Pig Barbeque food truck. “This is what the Citizens Bank of Edmond team and President and CEO Jill Castilla is all about. We’re so grateful to be a part of it!”

Local restanteurs like Eddie’s Bar and Grill also were grateful to take part in the local event.

“What a great night after all the gloomy weather for the past couple of days!” said Edward Wrenn, owner of Eddie’s Bar and Grill. “There was great live music, beverages and of course, we enjoyed serving our hot wings from our local restaurant down the street in Edmond.”

Heard on Hurd will return to the corner of Broadway and Hurd next month on June 17. The musical lineup and vendors for the June festival are still being finalized.
