Seminar: Advanced BIS Auditing

04/22/2013 - 04/23/2013

Minneapolis, MN

This course will focus on auditing Windows workstations and servers. Workstations and servers in their default condition are poorly secured. Participants will walk through the process to identify:

  • Missing, weak, or (vendor) default passwords
  • Missing security patches
  • Unsupported operating systems
  • Common weak configurations
  • Common vendor default configurations.

This is a hands-on, interactive course. Each participant will be provided with a computer workstation loaded with scanning/testing tools. We will methodically walk through how to use the tools (including port scanners and vulnerability scanners) to identify vulnerabilities and the configuration settings needed to harden the weak configurations.

Participants will receive instruction in the use of the tools, followed by time focused on practicing the audit of workstations and servers, while interacting with experienced IT auditors. Participants should have a working understanding of Windows operating systems and basic networking concepts.

Participants will leave the session with increased confidence to audit workstations and network servers, an understanding of key default configurations to look for and how to harden these configurations, working tools that can be used to analyze and audit the network environment and more effective IT audits for their organization.
