ICBA Congratulates Houghton on Community Banker of the Year Award
Washington, D.C. (Dec. 1, 2004)-Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA), the nation's largest banking trade organization, congratulates Mary Houghton, president of ShoreBank Corp. of Chicago, for being honored by American Banker newspaper as Community Banker of the Year.
"ICBA congratulates Mary Houghton for receiving this well-deserved recognition in leading one of the nation's finest community development banks," said ICBA President and CEO Camden R. Fine. "Excellence is the hallmark of every community bank, and Ms. Houghton has demonstrated that she is one of the most effective leaders in our industry. That's a remarkable accomplishment, and we commend her for being an industry role model."
According to American Banker, "Houghton was the instrumental leader in making ShoreBank what it is today-the gold standard of community development banks. Not only has ShoreBank done a world of good for the communities it serves by making loans that many other banks won't, it is highly profitable-a claim few community development banks can make. Furthermore, under Houghton's leadership, the bank has taken its model and transferred it to other markets and organizations."
Houghton's ShoreBank Corp. is the parent company for three ICBA member banks: ShoreBank, Chicago, Ill.; ShoreBank Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio; and ShoreBank Pacific, Ilwaco, Wash.
The editors of American Banker select the four recipients of the publication's Banker of the Year Awards. A Special Report titled Best in Banking 2004, showcasing profiles of the 2004 honorees and a wrap-up of the year's most important stories and trends, will be published in the December 2nd edition of American Banker.
