ICBA Honors Georgia Bank for Community Service Work

Washington, D.C. (May 12, 2004) - The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) presented its annual Grand National Community Bank Service Award this week to Capital Bank of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., to recognize the ICBA member's many outstanding volunteer service efforts.

Capital Bank President Danny Flowers accepted the award on behalf of the bank. Last year, Capital Bank employees volunteered over 2,100 hours of service and raised $145,000 for local schools, community activities and charities. All this was accomplished with only 50 employees, in a county of 53,000 people. The bank has also received honors from both state and local organizations for its innovative and comprehensive approach to community service.

Alden Buerge, chairman of ICBA's Marketing Committee and chairman and CEO of First State Bank of Joplin, Mo., presented the award to Capital Bank. "When Danny Flowers became president of Capital Bank five years ago, he recommitted his community bank to one of our industry's best ideals-volunteer service," said Buerge. "In so doing, he unleashed a wave of positive energy and activity among his bank's 46 employees."

"We hope that the seed of volunteerism that we have planted will continue to grow," said Capital Bank President Danny Flowers, who accepted the Grand National Community Bank Service Award on behalf of the bank. "Little things can mean a lot."

Capital Bank receive the Grand National Community Bank Service Award during the ICBA Annual Joint Committee Meetings, held this week at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Flowers also received congratulations from Rep. Nathan Deal of Georgia when the two met on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

ICBA selected Capital Bank as its winner of the Grand National Community Bank Service Award from its nearly 5,000 members nationwide. ICBA founded the awards program three years ago to recognize the many outstanding volunteer service efforts of community banks across the country.
