FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ICBA Community Bank Members Participate in EPA ENERGY STAR Program

Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2008)—In recognition of today being Earth Day, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) said that member community banks throughout the nation are participating in a joint initiative with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR® program to reduce energy consumption — and greenhouse gas emissions — by 10 percent.

"ICBA is delighted that, with EPA, community banks are taking action to promote energy efficiency and reduce costs while contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions," said Karen Tyson, ICBA senior vice president and director of communications. "Every day, community banks work to make their communities good places to live and work and through ENERGY STAR they are able to celebrate Earth Day every day of the year."

EPA's ENERGY STAR Program is a nationwide initiative that offers tools to help community banks implement cost-effective retrofit and new construction strategies for energy efficient lighting, climate controls, equipment, and building design, as well as improved energy practices and technologies. Portfolio Manager, an interactive energy management tool, allows community banks to track and assess energy and water consumption in a secure online environment.

First announced in December 2007, ICBA's joint initiative with the EPA and the ENERGY STAR Challenge now has nearly 300 community banks participating. The initiative allows community banks to set an example as good corporate citizens by reducing energy consumption. Through the program community banks can reduce utility costs by an average of $3,500 per year per bank branch. ICBA is the only national banking trade association to team up with EPA to reduce energy consumption.
