ICBA Calls On Congress to Pass Disaster Relief for Farms and Ranches

ICBA and 33 Agricultural Groups Urge Immediate Action

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 12 2006)—The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) and 33 agricultural and rural organizations called on congressional leaders to quickly provide emergency disaster relief for drought-damaged farms and ranches.

"Congress has a golden opportunity to act quickly to bring relief to thousands of farmers and ranchers and rural communities," said Mark Scanlan, director of ICBA's Office of Agricultural and Rural Policy. "This relief will allow many farmers and ranchers to remain in business and help prevent severe economic problems on Main Streets throughout the drought-impacted areas."

In their letter to congressional leaders, the groups said that producers, creditors, rural businesses and families need Congress to take action to provide them with some certainty for financial planning. The letter noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture declared the majority of U.S. counties as disaster areas in 2005 and 2006.
