ICBA and EPA's ENERGY STAR® Challenge
How to Participate
2 WAYS TO PARTICIPATE
ENERGY STAR offers easy-to-use tools to get you started. Begin saving money on energy costs with one of two ways: Portfolio Manager and Sure Savers.
Assess your energy use and costs by registering with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, an online database that helps banks to track their before-and-after energy usage and benchmark community bank numbers against other community banks. You'll be eligible for national recognition from ICBA and the EPA. Your energy use data is confidential and not accessible by ICBA or EPA. Learn how to benefit from Portfolio Manager by reading the attached PDF or participating in a live, online seminar about general energy saving tips and tools for benchmarking energy use.
Sure Saver allows you to use energy-and cost-saving tips without registering and tracking with Portfolio Manager. Banks using Sure Saves are not eligible for recognition because savings and use cannot be measured.
Implement easy-to-use tools with Sure Savers Steps. Most businesses achieve a 10 percent reduction in energy use and cost by following the steps noted.

GOAL SETTING/SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS
If you're using Portfolio Manager, once you have entered your energy use and costs you can set goals for increasing your community bank's energy efficiency. Or you can simply use the tools available through ENERGY STAR to determine what improvements or upgrades you'd like to initiate.
ICBA and the EPA recognize community banks that improve energy efficiency by 10 percent. Based on results from EPA's national energy performance rating system, ENERGY STAR Leaders recognition is provided for the following achievements: Portfolio-wide reductions in normalized energey use of 10 percent, 20 percent, 30 percent or more; and an average energy performance rating of 75 or better portfolio-wide.
To receive recognition:
- Join ENERGY STAR and create an account in Portfolio Manager.
- Enter data and receive a baseline rating for all of your eligible facilities using the EPA's energy performance rating system found in Portfolio Manager. Portfolio Manager aggregates individual building ratings and generates an average energy performance rating between 1 and 100 for your portfolio.
- Demonstrate improvement by reducing energy use by 10 percent, 20 percent, 30 percent or more or achieve an average energy performance rating of 75 or better for all of your buildings.
- Apply for ENERGY STAR Leaders recognition as you achieve each milestone.
